The afternoon excursion was to Chateauneuf-en-Auxois.  The following quote from Burgandy-tourism.com gives a good idea of what we were going to see - 

Châteauneuf-en-Auxois is one of the last remaining examples of 14th century Burgundian military architecture. During the Hundred Years War, towers and curtain walls were built to defend the village and the Auxois plains.

We stopped on one of the plains and it was a good vantage point for some pictures.  Although these 3 pictures were taken from the same spot, through the magic of telephoto lens, you can get some idea of how imposing the castle is as you approach it.
